Guidance for practitioners supporting victims of technology-facilitated domestic abuse – National Cyber Security Centre

Practical advice to help victims of cyber-enabled domestic abuse, stalking and harassment, including control, coercion, threatening behaviour, or violence.

Working in partnership with charities, law enforcement, and independent domestic violence advisors, the NCSC offers bespoke guidance to support practitioners working with victims of technology-facilitated domestic abuse, stalking & harassment.

Technology-facilitated domestic abuse relates to the use of technology to facilitate domestic abuse offences, such as incidents of control, coercion, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse. This can range from monitoring emails, social media activity and internet history, to using smart cameras and speakers to covertly monitor victims in their own homes.

Cases of domestic abuse increasingly involve the use of technology. Charities supporting victims have reported a rise in the number of people seeking advice related to technology-facilitated domestic abuse. This trend is unsurprising, given our growing reliance on internet-connected devices—whether at work, at home, or on the go.

Our guidance has been written for frontline practitioners who are supporting victims of technology-facilitated domestic abuse. It provides clear, practical advice that can be used in everyday scenarios to protect victims. It includes a section on preventative measures that victims can take to reduce the likelihood of an abuser being able to monitor their phones, computers, smart devices and online accounts.

30 March 2023 15:00 ~ Bloom workshop: Learn how to deliver trauma support online – Chayn – Online

Join us for a workshop to learn about Chayn’s remote trauma support service Bloom, and how you can adapt it to your work or organisation.

In 2020, Chayn launched Bloom (https://bloom.chayn.co) — a free remote trauma support service, to fill a serious existing gap in online, scalable services that survivors can access anywhere for free. Since 2020, Bloom has supported over 2,500 survivors from over 60 countries.

What is Bloom?

Bloom is a multilingual trauma-informed programme designed to support survivors of gender-based violence in their healing. Co-created by our global team of survivors, allies, and trauma-informed therapists, Bloom contains:

  • Curated video courses on topics such as healing from sexual trauma and reclaiming resilience in our trauma stories
  • Activities
  • Grounding exercises
  • Bonus content
  • Access to our 1-1 chat service

About this workshop

This workshop is designed to support gender-based violence organisations to apply learnings and elements from Bloom to their own work. The workshop will cover how we run Bloom and share some of our learnings so far. We will include practical exercises in Miro that support participants to think about how the Bloom model can be used or adapted for their own work.

We will not look in-depth at the content of Bloom courses in the workshop, but course materials will be provided to participants afterwards. There will also be ample opportunity for connection and discussion with other peers working in the gender-based violence field and beyond.

Who is this workshop for?

This online workshop is open to nonprofits and organisations, based anywhere in the world, that are running trauma responsive, healing and wellbeing, or mental health services. This workshop is particularly relevant for gender-based violence (GBV) organisations who want to learn from the Bloom model to inform their own work. If you work in a GBV organisation that is thinking about how to adapt your existing services or programmes to fit a more online model, or are thinking about how to adapt Bloom’s content to be delivered as part of in-person services, this workshop is for you!

We strongly suggest participants join from a computer and not a mobile device as we will be doing practical exercises in Miro. We will do a brief Miro tutorial for people who have never used it before, or you can watch one in advance here!

What does this workshop cost?

We have a tiered pricing structure for this workshop, with suggested ticket prices from free for grassroots initiatives and small charities to £75 for larger organisations. These suggested prices are flexible and we don’t want cost to be a deterrent for anyone joining us – please select the ticket price which is feasible for your circumstances.(*)

Who will be running the workshop?

This workshop will be facilitated by Chayn staff members, Francesca Jarvis, our Survivor Services Lead, and Beatriz Diaz, our Design and Experience Coordinator. Both are integral parts of the Bloom team.

About Chayn

Chayn is a global non-profit that creates digital, multilingual resources to support the healing of survivors of gender-based violence. Our focus is on empowering women and other marginalised genders who have experienced domestic, sexual or tech-based abuse. Every decision we make – and every resource we create – has lived experience at its core.

So far, we’ve helped over 530,000 survivors around the world. And – with a mission to make technology a tool for health, not harm – we reach more every day. Our resources present vital information and advice in simple, easy-to-understand language.

Where we go next is led by what survivors need. Our name (pronounced ‘ch-en’) means peace of mind in Urdu. We believe every survivor deserves solace—and we won’t stop until that’s accomplished.
