@ Henry Thomas Room (TG-30), Holloway campus, London Metropolitan University, 166-220 Holloway Road, London N7 8DB

Women and Violence

This seminar offers new insights into Women and Violence, focussing not only on violence against women and girls but role of women as combatants in state and non-state violence across the globe.

Although the female fighter is often seen as an anomaly, women make up nearly 30% of militant movements worldwide. At the same time, women combatants are also at risk uniquely gendered violence by state and non-state actors alike. This panel brings together academic and creative writings to examine the complex experience of women as victims, survivors and perpetrators of violence and offers ways for rethinking contemporary narratives of gender, violence and power across the globe, including USA, UK and Europe.

Speakers:

Dr Nimmi Gowrinathan is an activist, writer, and scholar and founder of the Politics of Sexual Violence Initiative where she directs, Beyond Identity: A Gendered Platform for Scholar-Activists at the City College of New York, the Publisher of Adi Magazine, and the creator of the Female Fighter Series at Guernica Magazine. Her forthcoming book, Radicalizing Her (Beacon Press 2021), examines the politics of the female fighter. Her political essays which have appeared in Harper’s Magazine, Freeman’s Journal, Guernica Magazine, and Foreign Affairs among others has been described as “searing in a search for answers” (Publisher’s Weekly).

Dr Meena Kandasamy is an anti-caste activist, poet, novelist and translator. Her writing aims to deconstruct trauma and violence, while spotlighting the militant resistance against caste, gender, and ethnic oppressions. She explores this in her poetry and prose, most notably in her books of poems such as Touch (2006) and Ms. Militancy (2010), as well as her three novels, The Gypsy Goddess (2014), When I Hit You (2017), and Exquisite Cadavers (2019).
