13 April 2017 18:00 ~ Protest: #ScrapTheRapeClause – Glasgow

Until 18:45 @ George Square, Glasgow

PROTEST: Scotland stands against the Family Cap and Rape Clause

There has been incredible and united anger against the Family Cap and Rape Clause in Scotland; one week on, we’re gathering to tell the DWP that our strong opposition is not going anywhere.

On the 6th of April the Family Cap came into force, limiting Child Tax Credits to just two children unless a woman can prove that the third or subsequent child was born of rape.

The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) wanted women’s organisations to participate, and act as third party verifiers. In an unprecedented move, both Rape Crisis Scotland and Scottish Women’s Aid have refused. Despite having no-one to actually implement it in Scotland, the DWP pressed ahead UK wide, and we now have a policy that could make women choose between poverty and disclosing – possibly for the first time ever – that they were raped.

Both the Family Cap and Rape Clause are cruel policies that will push women and their children into poverty. Life is unpredictable – people die, people leave, people lose their jobs – welfare is supposed to be a safety net that catches those who need it.

Limiting welfare to two children is nothing but an attack on the poor. We stand against the Family Cap and the Rape Clause, and we’re not giving up.

*We want to make sure that this protest is accessible. George Sq is wheelchair accessible and the protest will be static. Volunteer stewards will be on hand and we will strive to make sure that seating is prioritised for those who need it. Please get in touch (details below) if there is more that we can do to make sure everyone can attend.*

The protest will be live streamed for those who cannot attend – details to follow.

13 April 2017 18:30 ~ #Women for Syria – Women’s March on London and Syria Solidarity Campaign – London

Until 19:30 @ North Terrace, Trafalgar Square

#WomenForSyria // 13.4.17 // Cities across the World

We have said NEVER AGAIN too many times. But again here we are. Syria.

In the past few days we have witnessed the horror of an aftermath of the Assad regime’s chemical attacks on the Syrian people, including young children.

Our hearts are in mourning. We are outraged. We know that over 500,000 Syrians have been killed and over 6 million have been displaced within Syria and throughout the world.

We can’t sit back. We know there are no easy solutions but we can at least alleviate the pain and suffering of the refugees.

We demand that our government increase the number of Syrian refugees we let into the United Kingdom. We know they have endured extreme vetting and are eager to find safety and security.

We want them here. Let them in.

Join us for a vigil to stand with the people of Syria and let them know they are not alone. We hear you. We see you.

We call on Women’s March organizers and supporters to invite their local communities on Thursday, April 13, at 6pm local time for vigils across the World. Bring candles and signs and wear blue for peace.

Share your events on social media using the hashtag #WomenForSyria. ‪Together, let’s send a strong message that we are speaking out; we will not be silent in the face of these atrocities. #WomenForSyria
