Join us for a discussion considering histories of violence against women in times of conflict (until 20.15)

Violence against women has been a recurring feature of social and political conflicts around the world. Examining specific cultural contexts in detail, this workshop focuses on three main questions:

  1. How have archival and documentary practices approached histories of violence against women?
  2. How has violence against women been subject to competing definitions, narratives and interpretations within broader national and international conflicts?
  3. How might artists and writers work with communities in responding to these histories?

The workshop takes place in the Tanks at Tate Modern, alongside Amar Kanwar’s The Lightning Testimonies 2007, an eight-channel video installation with accompanying archival material that explores sexual violence against women in South Asia. Kanwar will contribute to the discussion along with Joanna Bourke, Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London. The workshop will be chaired by Nada Raza, Research Curator in the Tate Research Centre: Asia.

The Lightning Testimonies will be screened for ticket holders at 18.15, before the discussion, and at 20.15, after the workshop.

The Lightning Testimonies is on display at Tate Modern from 18 December 2017 – 29 January 2018.

28 January 2018 ~ £15m of new Tampon Tax funding for women’s charities – application deadline

Grants of at least £1 million will be given to projects by UK charities that support mental health and wellbeing and tackle violence against women and girls.

Women’s charities can now bid for the latest £15 million round of the Tampon Tax Fund, Minister for Sport and Civil Society Tracey Crouch announced today.

Projects that aim to reduce drug and alcohol abuse and engage excluded and vulnerable women through sport can also apply for funding.

The deadline for applications closes at midnight on Sunday 28 January 2018 and applications are particularly welcomed from organisations that support women and girls across multiple regions.

All grants from this round of funding may be provided for one or two year projects. All activities must be delivered and funds must be spent by March 2020.

Eligibility:

  • The fund is open to charitable, benevolent and philanthropic organisations from across the United Kingdom
  • Applications should be for £1 million or more
  • The value of the grant requested must not represent more than 50% of the applicant’s collective annual income
  • Applications should focus on 1 of 3 categories: violence against women and girls, mental health and wellbeing, or the general programme
  • Grants may be for 1 or 2 year projects
  • All project activities must be concluded and funds must be spent by 31 March 2020
  • Where applicable, bids must include details of arrangements for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults as part of their planned activities
