10 June 2018 17:30 ~ What is feminism? What is our her-story? A FiLiA workshop at Antiuniversity Now – London

Until 19:30 @ Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London WC1R 4RL

This event is part of Antiuniversity Now Festival

Sisters! We are the daughters of all the women who lived before us; women who worked and dared and fought for our children, our bodies, our planet, ourselves. We are the grand-daughters of the suffragettes who marched to give us visibility and the right to vote. And at the same time, we are also the descendants of the witches they could not burn. This amazing legacy is an inseparable part of us, and challenges us to keep fighting for women’s and girls’ rights today everywhere in the world.

Come together to share experiences and talk about who we are as women, our she-roes (vs. heroes), our individual her-stories and our common her-story (vs. histories and history). Let’s reflect on what is patriarchy, how we can fight injustice and violence, how we can contribute towards making a better global society where pay disparity, discrimination against refugees, racism, classism, religious prejudice, environmental destruction will become a thing of the past. No topic is taboo. All are welcome.

This friendly, inclusive, safe workshop will invite participants to reflect, write, speak and converse. Aiming to explore what each of us defines as feminism, this individual and collective discussion moderated by our facilitators wishes to foster a productive, tolerant, open-minded conversation.

The participants will be provided with a number of materials that they can use as an inspiration, such as images, objects, texts, slogans, poetry, art, etc. You are welcome to also bring a special object, text, or visual item that you wish to discuss about and share its story and your related herstory with the other participants.

The workshop encourages intersectional collaboration across different women groups in society regardless of age, status, background, sexual orientation, etc.

The Latin word ‘filia’ from which we derive our name means ‘daughter’, reflecting the fact that we are the daughters of the women who came before us. Their legacy challenges us to keep fighting for the liberation of all women and girls today.

10 June 2018 ~ Processions – 100 years of women’s suffrage – London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast

On 10 June 2018 in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast there will be processions to celebrate 100 years of women’s suffrage.

Women, girls and those who identify as female or non-binary are invited  to register on the Processions website and to choose and then attend whichever of the four Processions suits them best, to be part of the largest ever UK participatory artwork, and to create a living and dynamic picture of women in Britain today, in all our glorious diversity. Register at https://www.processions.co.uk/register/

The practical details of the Processions are not public as yet, as the logistical details of road closures, parking, toilets, stewards etc will all depend on likely numbers, and it’s still a bit early to make a call on that. Keep in touch via the web site http://www.processions.co.uk and the facebook event pages for each city:

Banners – make a new one or bring an existing one

Artichoke / Processions has commissioned 100 groups to create a banner, and we also invite any/all other attending groups and individuals to create a banner and bring it along, or to bring a banner they might already have – as eg unions often do. However, a banner is not at all compulsory! Being there and ‘processing’ is all anyone (who wants to come along) has to do.

At the start of every Procession, women will be given a cotton wrap in either white, purple or green, which they can tie around themselves as they choose, and then we will walk in stripes of the suffragette colours.

See toolkit for making a banner at https://www.processions.co.uk/workshops/toolkits/
