2 March 2016 14:00 ~ Voices From The Margins – Safety4Sisters North West – Manchester

Until 16:00 @ Manchester Metropolitan University Business School
Room 3.11, Oxford Road, Manchester M15 6BH

Safety4Sisters North West supports migrant women with no recourse to public funds who are experiencing domestic abuse. This group of women are some of the most vulnerable, isolated, marginalised and unheard women within media, decision making and public policy arenas.

We are holding an event called ‘Voices From The Margins’ to counteract the lack of space, value and opportunities given to women to voice their experiences and lived realities safely.

This event aims to introduce and engage participants, notably policy makers and practitioners, to the experiences of women surviving on the margins of both state and public life and the extraordinary difficulties they face when dealing with gender based violence and increasingly harsh immigration policies in the age of austerity.

This event is free but we would welcome donations on the day of nappies, sanitary towels and toiletries for the women who use our service. Many of the women are destitute at the point they contact Safety4Sisters and rely on our support to enable them to buy the basics. All donations would be most welcome.

The event timetable

2.00pm – Arrivals, registration, collection of donations and refreshments.

2.20pm – Welcome from Dr Kate Cook, Safety4Sisters member and co-leader of the Sylvia Pankhurst Gender Research Centre at MMU.

2.30pm – Dr Khatidja Chantler, Reader, School of Social Work, Care and Community, UCLAN.  “Women, immigration and mental health”.

2.45pm – Film showing: Safety4Sisters’ film commissioned for this event, “Voices from the Margins” where women speak of their own experiences.

2.55pm – Sandhya Sharma of Safety4Sisters discusses the political implications of these experiences.

3.00pm – Vicky Marsh of Safety4Sisters on the Migrant Women’s Right To Safety Project.

3.15pm – General discussion and ideas for future action.

This event has been supported with a grant from Manchester City Council.

2 March 2016 10:00 ~ Domestic abuse: responding to coercive control in Wales – Welsh Women’s Aid seminar – Cardiff

Featuring Professor Evan Stark
Until 16:00 at the SSE SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff

“Coercive control is a strategic course of conduct designed to dominate a partner through a pattern of physical and sexual coercion, intimidation, exploitation, isolation, regulation and the deprivation of basic rights and liberties … Ironically, as abuse continues and a victim’s entrapment becomes more comprehensive, the service response often becomes more perfunctory.”
(Coercive control; how men entrap women in personal life, Professor Evan Stark)

You are invited to join us for this unique opportunity for Welsh Public Services, Criminal Justice and Third Sector professionals to hear directly from Professor Evan Stark, who conceptualised coercive control and advised the UK Government on its criminalisation.

Professor Stark will be leading this one day seminar, and will be joined by other experts in the field in Wales, to examine how health, social care, housing, police, offender managers, specialist services, and other professionals in Wales should identify and respond to survivors and perpetrators where coercive control is being used in relationships and in families.

That coercive control is now a criminal offence (from 29 December 2015) means this is not only a crime against liberty which reduces women’s ‘space for action’, but also shifts our understanding of injury caused by abuse to harms against personhood, autonomy, liberty and dignity. Understanding coercive control as being central to experiences of domestic abuse is essential if we are to reduce and prevent violence and abuse across all public services, and for all families and communities in Wales.
