Free (*)

Until 21:30 @ Holborn Library, 32-38 Theobalds Road, London WC1X 8PA

Screenings of short films followed by a panel including members of Belsize Lane Women’s Liberation Workshop, originally established in 1969.

Camden, with its history of radical thought, squatting and social experiment was central to the 1970s women’s movement with 7 of London’s 27 Women’s Liberation Workshop groups listed in the magazine Shrew in 1972 giving Camden addresses.

The event is part of a series accompanying the exhibition: A Stone’s Throw from Westminster: Suffragettes and Other Feminists in Camden, running at Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre till 5th October, which has been called ‘brilliant’ ‘wonderful’ ‘very detailed and richly evocative’. Alongside original material on the suffrage movement in Camden it includes banners, books, badges, magazines, audio-video, flyers and original posters from the women’s liberation movement, feminist theatre in Camden, Wages for Housework, the Women Into Manual Labour movements and others in the 1970s and 80s.

This event will explore further the history and context of this rich seam of work and feminist activism in the borough.

SuffrageArts operates under the auspices of the charity Unfinished Histories Ltd. Neither organisation receives any core funding. Your donations will enable us to pay performers, organisers and workshop leaders and share this important work with a wider audience. For further details email: suffragearts@gmail.com
