Until 8pm @ King’s College London Guy’s Campus, Great Maze Pond, London SE1
From the murder of Bradford-born Samia Shahid, who was strangled by her first husband in July 2016, and the murder of Pakistani model Qandeel Baloch by her brother that same month for supposedly posting provocative selfies, honour based violence and killings are a both a tragic and global occurence.
In examining the “current focus on culture” and replacing it with “a more complex, nuanced understanding of the issues at stake: one that looks at the various types of inequality that lie behind not just ‘honour’-based violence but all forms of violence against women”, we are joined by an expert panel of experts to explore the issues of honour based violence and forced marriages.
We are joined by three passionate and distinguished speakers who will be drawing on their wide range of experience, with plenty of time for discussion and questions. These talks will address the impact of gender based violence in a more local context around London and the UK as well exploring the role that the health profession holds.

- Poly Harrar is the founder of the Sharan Project a national charity supporting women who have been or are at risk of being disowned in the UK and lead partner for OUR GIRL a national forced marriage prevention and awareness campaign . Polly has been supporting women for over 20 years and is a recognised court expert on FM and HBA, she has been presented with numerous awards including the Points of Light award by the former Prime Minister David Cameron.
- Asma Ashraf is a research Nurse at UCL and in July 2015 was involved in running a one day workshop on forced marriage at UCL which evolved into the creation of lectures to all Year 5 UCL Medical Students on gender-based violence and forced marriage. Asma has since worked with the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham on a Tackling Violence Against Women & Girls Forum.
