WE have been pushing for the Istanbul Convention to be ratified by Parliament since our party began. The time has come to double our efforts as we ask MPs to stand up for women’s rights.
On 16 December 2016 MPs will vote on one of the most significant legal frameworks for tackling violence against women and girls.
We need 100 MPs to turn up to move to the bill to next stage. But many MPs spend Fridays in their constituencies, especially the last Friday before Parliament breaks for Christmas.
This legislation is needed because on average two women in England and Wales are killed every week by a current or former male partner, and at least one in five women have experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16.
The UK government signed a commitment to seeing through the Convention five years ago, but the government has failed to honour its promise. In that time, 582 women have lost their lives to gender-based violence.
