14 November 2016 ~ Women Centre Stage Festival – Sphinx Theatre – London – until 20 November 2016

Sphinx Theatre presents  WOMEN CENTRE STAGE: POWER PLAY a festival celebrating women on stage from the 14th – 20th November at Hampstead Theatre and The Actors Centre. A pioneering festival including workshops, discussions, live performances and new plays from some of the country’s leading names and most exciting new talents creating more and better roles for women.

This year’s festival will feature a jam packed programme of leading UK theatre stars and professionals includes Janet Suzman, Howard Brenton, Anna Ledwich, April de Angelis, Cecilia Noble, Vinay Patel, GRAEAE, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Charlene James, Winsome Pinnock, Kathryn Pogson, The Hiccup Project plus many more leading and exciting new talents.

Women Centre Stage Festival 2016 will offer workshops at The Actor’s Centre on the 14th, 15th and 16th of November and on the 20th of November the festival will be producing a venue take over at Hampstead Theatre for a Performance Day with a difference; which will feature seven programmes throughout the day including leading writers, actors and companies from across the country in curated mixed bills of showcases, scratch and work-in-progress.

Women Centre Stage Festival aims to generate more and better roles for women in UK theatre. Research by The Guardian and The Stage in 2014 showed that female characters represented less than 25% of main-stage parts in UK theatre, with the number of female directors and writers creating work for main-stage venues consistently below 40% over the last two decades. Women Centre Stage Festival was initiated by Sphinx Theatre – a company with 40 years’ experience campaigning for gender equality – to bring together artists, venues, commissioners and funders in expanding the range of women’s roles.
