Until 19:30 @ Hackney Museum, 1 Reading Lane, London E8 1GQ

East End Women’s Museum and Hackney Museum invite you the launch of our new exhibition ‘Making Her Mark: 100 Years of Women’s Activism in Hackney’.

In 1918 most women over 30 gained the right to vote in parliamentary elections. But the story of women’s activism in Hackney doesn’t begin or end with the suffragettes.

Over the past 100 years, local women have brought about change in their community and in wider society through political campaigns, industrial action, peaceful protest, direct action, and the arts.

Discover the inspiring stories of women who made a difference in the borough and beyond, across issues ranging from education, workers’ rights, and healthcare to domestic violence, the peace movement, and police relations.

This exhibition tells the story of women-led activism in Hackney from 1918 to the present day. It was created by the East End Women’s Museum in collaboration with Hackney Museum.

29 October 2016 ~ Launch Event Movement Exhibition – The BAM! Sistahood! Project – Newcastle

Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne

The Movement Exhibition documents an important part of the region’s heritage and the BAM! Sistahood! Project’s development in digitally recording diverse intergenerational women’s lives in the North East of England.

It forms part of an archive created by women who are part of the BAM! Sistahood! Project over the project’s two-year duration. Using objects, printmaking, textiles, digital photography and film as a way to explore difference as well as cross cultural similarities, Movement gives an insight to the many diverse aspects of women’s heritage in the North East.

The exhibition documents the wide range of work that the BAM! Sistahood! Project participants have developed across the region from traditional textile folk art to the highly skilled execution of large-scale lino-prints, video and digital photography.

The exhibition will also display a range of objects from Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Indonesia that have not yet been publically displayed and document the cross-cultural migration journeys of women who have been instrumental in political and social change across the region.

Exhibition & Launch: Destination Tyneside Gallery, Discovery Museum, Blandford Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4JA
