7 December 2022 11:00 ~ Lunch and Learn Conference Stop Domestic Abuse Against Black Somali Women – Women’s Inclusive Team – London

Join us for our, Educate + Action = Social Change lunch and learn conference to stop domestic abuse against black Somali women.

To end this year’s 16-days of activism to end domestic abuse, we are excited to invite you to our Educate + Action = Social Change, lunch and learn conference to Stop domestic abuse against black Somali women.

Our experienced team will highlight the immediate needs, identified through our pilot Hawaa domestic abuse project, on why domestic abuse services must be tailored towards black Somali women. Women of all races and religions face unique challenges when it comes to domestic abuse, but Somali women often face additional cultural and religious barriers that prevent them from seeking help.

By attending this event, you will gain a better understanding of these barriers and how they can be overcome. We hope that you will join us in our efforts to make domestic abuse services more inclusive for all women.

The conference is open to all professionals with a vested interest in improving their knowledge and understanding to better support black Somali Muslim women.

6 December 2022 15:00 ~ Pornography and Prostitution: Connecting the Dots – Culture Reframed – Online

    UK Time: 15:00 – 21:45 GMT (?)

This conference will be simultaneously translated in Turkish and Italian.

In the 1970s and 80s, feminists argued that prostitution could not be separated from pornography, or, as Andrea Dworkin so vividly put it, “porn is prostitution with the camera rolling.” With the migration of the sex industry to online platforms, Andrea Dworkin’s prophetic words are undeniable.

Over the ensuing decades, there has been a highly successful public relations campaign by the porn industry to distance itself from other aspects of the commercial sex industry as a way to legitimize pornography.

But this disguises what porn really is: filmed prostitution that is coercive and abusive for the female performers, and closely linked to other parts of the sex industry in both its practices and societal impact.

Pornography & Prostitution: Connecting the Dots will explore how — from recruitment to consumption — pornography and prostitution are inseparable. While economists use the concept of value chains to describe the steps involved in creating and disseminating a “product,” the commercial sex industry would be more aptly referred to as a harm chain.

Culture Reframed invites you to this conference to:

  • Learn more about the multiple harms of pornography and prostitution;
  • Better understand the ways in which they are inextricably linked;
  • Identify how the integrated ecosystem of the commercial sex industry normalizes male sexual violence against women; and
  • Discuss ways in which we can leverage our collective knowledge and activism to break the harm chain.

5 December 2022 12:00 ~ Preventing misogynistic crime, the Scottish model – Equality Coalition – Belfast

A seminar on the misogyny aggravator model developed by the Working Group on Misogyny and Criminal Justice in Scotland

  • Ends 14:00
  • Location: Senate Chamber Parliament Buildings Ballymiscaw, Stormont Belfast BT4 3XX
  • Free – but please register(*)

Sponsor Naomi Long MLA, and co-sponsors Sinéad Ennis MLA and Diane Forsythe MLA, invite you to attend this Equality Coalition seminar on ‘Preventing misogynistic crime, the Scottish model’.

  • Keynote speaker: Baroness Helena Kennedy KC
  • Chair: Patricia McKeown, Regional Secretary, UNISON, and Co-Convener of the Equality Coalition

Earlier this year, the Working Group on Misogyny and Criminal Justice in Scotland produced the report, Misogyny – A Human Rights Issue, authored by Baroness Helena Kennedy KC. This report provides a blueprint for tackling misogynistic crime through the criminal law.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, the Department of Justice (DoJ) recently conducted a first stage consultation seeking views on the inclusion of misogyny in relation to a future hate crime bill, following an independent review of hate crime legislation.

At this in-person seminar, Baroness Kennedy will present on the new Scottish model and we will reflect on its potential application in NI. Lunch will be provided at the start of the event.

This seminar follows on from a previous webinar about the model, which was held in June this year by the Equality Coalition in conjunction with members of the Women’s Policy Group NI and Coalition Against Hate Crimes Ireland.

If you have any questions about the event, email equalitycoalition@caj.org.uk

The Equality Coalition is co-convened by CAJ and UNISON.
